As the question begs, what's the best way to get advertising from local businesses for my magazine? Thanks.

While I do not have any hands-on experience with this, I can tell you a few basics things that I know.

    1. The first thing you will need to do is pinpoint the audience base that you will be targeting. If you are planning on getting advertisements, I presume you would have already done that.

    2. Next, make a list of the local companies that target the same audience base as you will be targeting. If you have a general magazine that targets a variety of audiences, try to guess which kind of articles can be tied to what advertiser.

    3. Approach the advertisers. Tell them how they can benefit from advertising in your magazine. You might want to give them a discount if they want to advertise with you for a long-term. Also, don't forget to throw in a deal sweetener for the first few advertisers (don't let the other advertisers know about it though :P).

One last thing. Before people would want to advertise with you, they might want to see some numbers, some figures, etc. in terms of how many (potential) customers your magazine will reach, how many conversions it will yield them, etc. So you might want to get a free-trial issue out to your readers that can help you crunch your numbers better.

Good luck. Lets us know how it goes...

If your providing the ads free you probably will not have problems but if your charging you will probably need to have numbers for sure.

I am totally agree with boyuancy. I want to thank boyuancy for his nice reply post. I just want to add something more in this post. If you want to get advertising from local businesses for your magazine, you need to follow some important steps.
At first, You need to assemble a media kit for your magazine. The media kit should have information about who your customers are and what your competition in the publishing world is as well as why you're different from the competition. It should have some sample pages to present what the magazine will look like. It should also have important information about how often the magazine will publish and how you plan to distribute it.

Secondly, You need to identify companies that might be interested in advertising in your magazine. For example, if you are creating a women's fitness magazine for your city then all the fitness centers, gyms, fitness equipment retailers, health food stores and beauty products stores might be candidates for purchasing advertising in your magazine. You can also use the phone book or web pages to find the businesses in your area.

Then, You need to start calling or emailing your potential advertisers. If you choose to contact them by email, you can ask permission to send a digital copy of your media kit. You should not send repeated emails if people aren't interested as that constitutes spam, unwelcome email advertising, which is considered negative.

At last, You should offer deals for advertising in your magazine. If you're not popular, you need to offer special deals for people who want to advertising right away or for long periods. You need to knock off a percentage, say 25 percent, for the first 20 companies to buy ads in your magazine. You also need to give a discount for advertisers who want to buying more than one ad. You should consider that The longer the contract, the bigger the discount.

I think these tips will help you for getting advertising from local businesses for my magazine. Please share your experiences with us.

If your magazine is related to a particular theme then try to get the advertisements from the companies working in same field. Generally people like to read such customized magazines which are user oriented and related to a particular theme. You can also ask them to write an article in your magazine. You can get a good amount of payment from them as they are not only publishing their advertisement but also an article about their business. If you are publishing your magazine locally then local advertisers will definitely like this idea of marketing and you can get the advertisements from them.
